Rainforest that runs straight down to empty Pacific beaches — the wildest, most biodiverse corner of Costa Rica, and one of the best places I know for a family gathering.
National Geographic famously called the Osa "the most biologically intense place on Earth," and it earns it. Corcovado National Park covers a huge stretch of the peninsula, and the rainforest comes right down to the water. Scarlet macaws overhead, tapirs and monkeys in the trees, whales offshore, and beaches with nobody on them.
I traveled here with the Llanos family for a reunion, and it turned out to be the perfect place for it — everyone together at meals and on boat days, and plenty of room to peel off for a hike, a surf, or a hammock in the afternoon. Multigenerational groups do beautifully on the Osa because the lodges are small and the days are easy to shape around different energy levels.
Getting here is part of it: a short flight from San José into Puerto Jiménez or Drake Bay, then a drive or a boat. Once you arrive, days are Corcovado hikes with a naturalist guide, Golfo Dulce dolphin and whale trips, waterfall swims, night walks, and long slow dinners. It's remote without being uncomfortable.
